Choose by verification workflow

Compare search assistants by how quickly you can reach and check their sources. OpenAI's web search documentation describes search results and citations in ChatGPT web, with availability subject to workspace settings. Perplexity Pro Search describes research across multiple sources. Gemini's related-source help explains its source-checking signals. Treat links and signals as starting points for verification. Your decision should depend on the relevance of the sources and the work needed to check them.

A repeatable verification method

For any answer that matters, use the three-link rule. First, open the cited source that directly supports the main claim. Second, open a primary source if the cited source is a summary. Third, open a source that could disconfirm the claim, such as official docs, a changelog or an opposing standard. Then write your own one-sentence conclusion with the source date. If you cannot find a primary source, label the answer as reported, not verified.

Concrete example

Suppose you ask which passkey setup works best for your team. A good AI search answer may summarize FIDO, Apple, Google and Microsoft documentation. Your job is to open the FIDO page for the standard concept, then open your actual platform docs for setup details. If the answer says a browser supports a feature, verify that on the browser or account provider page. If the sources are blogs repeating each other, ask the tool to search official documentation only.

When to prefer each

Use ChatGPT Search when you already work in ChatGPT and want a cited answer that can continue into drafting, analysis or planning. Use Perplexity when you want a search-native flow with visible sources and quick follow-up research. Use Gemini when you want Google-integrated discovery or a second opinion from a different retrieval and ranking stack. Use NotebookLM when you already know the source set and need grounded research over that set. Do not choose based on one impressive answer. Choose based on repeatable verification friction.

Problems to check

  • Citation theater: a link exists, but it does not support the exact sentence.
  • Freshness mismatch: an answer combines old and new sources without noticing changed rules.
  • Primary-source gap: summaries cite each other while official docs are missing.
  • Locality error: restaurant, weather, law or availability answers assume the wrong place.
  • Model confidence: the prose sounds certain although evidence is weak. OpenAI's accuracy and limitations article warns that confident answers can still be wrong.

Next steps

Pick one important question and ask it in two tools. Save the answers, open the cited sources and score each tool on source relevance, missing caveats, ease of follow-up and how quickly you reached a primary source. Record which assistant helped you reach a supporting primary source fastest, and keep the source with your conclusion.

Scoring your tools

Use a small scorecard for recurring research: source quality, citation accuracy, date awareness, local-context handling, follow-up usefulness and privacy fit. Run the same five questions monthly if the tool matters to your work. Search assistants change quickly, so a choice that was right for last quarter may deserve another look.

Privacy fit

Search questions can reveal plans, customers, health details or unreleased work. Before using any AI search tool for sensitive research, check workspace policy and avoid pasting private data unless that use is approved. Verification includes source quality and data handling, not only answer quality.

Archive evidence

For decisions that may be revisited, save the source links and dates in your notes. AI answers change; your evidence trail should remain understandable.

Use a comparison question with a checkable answer

Ask both tools the same narrow question about a documented software feature. Require an official source, the relevant product version and any missing information. Score the returned passage against the question, then try a follow-up that changes one condition. For example, ask about a feature on desktop and then about its mobile availability. A source that answers the first question may not answer the second. Save the original answer before correcting it so your comparison captures the work you had to do. Avoid drawing a general model ranking from this test; it measures your research workflow on that question.
